William Yoast , Coach

William Yoast was born in 1924 and raised in Florence, Alabama.  After graduating from Coffee High School, he spent three years in the United States Air Force and went on to attend Georgia Military College in Milledgeville, Georgia.  He transferred to Mercer University in Macon where he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Physical Education.  During both his high school and college years he participated in football, basketball and track.  Yoast continued his studies at Peabody College in Nashville, Tennessee where he received his Masters and EDS degrees.

With early aspirations to become a minister, Yoast later turned to coaching and athletics.  He began teaching and coaching football, basketball, baseball and track in Sparta, Georgia.  After four years he moved to Roswell where he taught and coached football and tack for seven years.  He next found himself in Alexandria, Virginia where he spent the next 30 years of his career.  Yoast’s many teams in football, baseball and track won various championship seasons and Yoast himself was named Coach of the year in both Georgia and Virginia.  His message to the people he coached and worked with was one of trust, respect, kindness, integrity and loyalty.

Along with Herman Boone, Bill Yoast helped transform T. C. Williams High “Titans” into a model team and model school.  During their 1971 season, the team was ranked second in national polls and went on to win their state finals.

The father of four daughters and grandfather of seven, Yoast is now retired.  He enjoys spending time golfing, fishing and working out.  He is a beloved mentor to his many students who remain in close contact with their teacher and coach.
